The Marvelous Fly Geyser

fly-geyser01

This man-made geothermal and least known attraction is called the Fly Geyser. It was accidentally created in 1916 by well drilling for a geothermal energy exploration.

It is said that the well was left unplugged and in 1960 the geyser started releasing geothermal water releasing about 5 feet in the air.

Over the years, it continuously spewed water and dissolved minerals thus creating several mounds and terraces.

This spectacular attraction shows bright red, green and rainbow color on the mounds that sometimes changes its color.

The color comes from the minerals reacting to the oxygen and as well as from the thermophilic algae covering it.

Location

The amazing attraction is located 20 miles North of Gerlach, on a private fly ranch in Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA.

The fly ranch is about 0.3 miles from State Route 34 and is currently owned by Todd Jaksick. The property is off limits to visitors.

To exclude the private land from trespassers, it is locked behind a high fence, closed gate topped with barbed wire.

While on the west side, the Old Highway 34 provides access to the playa and to the Hualapai Flat.

If you drive to the neighboring town of Gerlach and go to Bruno’s restaurant they can put you in contact with the owners who do day tours of the spring for seasonal pricing.

Climate

“The Black Rock Desert is an extremely harsh environment. Temperatures are regularly over 100°F, with no natural shade, and almost zero percent humidity.

Hundreds of Burning Man participants are treated for dehydration every year; all attendees should drink about 1 gallon of water per day, some of which should contain added electrolytes” – Burning Man Survival Guide.

The Geyser is visible from the road however, you need to use binoculars or camera with a very powerful zoom lens.

The attraction is located on a private land and is not open to the public but visitors can still get a closer look for a fee and has to make an arrangement ahead of time to the owners.
