Intel and Hewlett-Packard are known moguls of computer processors and accessories. They have been keeping the technological advancements alive in the world of gadgets, gizmos and many others. You might be thinking that there’s a huge possibility that the place where these companies are located would have been a city wherein robots are a standard household fixture or the community itself is being moved by the most high-tech machineries.

But Rio Rancho in New Mexico is more that the city of Intel and Hewlett-Packard, it is a bustling area of the normal American life which boasts a lot of attractions and sceneries that will leave each traveler breathless. Though the population is literally smaller in number that its neighbors, Rio Rancho’s well-rounded government and economy sends this city as one of the leading contributors in the state’s gross domestic income. A super city on its own little way, Rio Rancho is on the rise to becoming USA’s most modernized area.

Location

Rio Rancho is the largest city and economic hub of Sandoval County in the U.S. state of New Mexico. A small portion of the city extends into northern Bernalillo County. It is the third-largest and also one of the fastest expanding cities in New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, Rio Rancho had a population of 87,521, a 69% rise from 2000. In 2012, the city had an estimated population of 90,818.
Rio Rancho is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rio Rancho is located at 35°17’10” North, 106°40’14” West (35.286185, -106.670660). It lies in the Albuquerque Basin to the west of the Rio Grande, which bounds the northeast corner of the city. There is an escarpment to the west of the city limit.

Rio Rancho is bordered by Albuquerque to the south, the Santa Ana Indian Reservation to the north, and Bernalillo and Corrales to the east.

Climate

Rio Rancho is in an arid climate with July to September as the hottest months to watch and December to February as the coldest season.

Transportation

Albuquerque’s transit department, ABQ RIDE, operates a bus route (251 Albuquerque-Rio Rancho Rail Runner Connection) connecting Rio Rancho with the New Mexico Rail Runner Express station at Journal Center. There is a proposed regional transportation taxing district.

The Rio Metro Regional Transportation District operates Rio Transit, a door to door para-transit service for Senior Citizens 55 years of age and older, and disabled adults 18 years of age and older, for residents of Rio Rancho. The service is operated out of the Meadowlark Senior Center, and provides service Monday-Friday from 730am to 300pm. Riders must register with the service prior to using it.

Rio Metro RTD also operates a commuter bus route serving the Enchanted Hills neighborhood in Rio Rancho. This service connects residents of Enchanted Hills to the US 550 New Mexico Rail Runner station and provides service during the morning and evening commutes. Rio Metro Bus connections are available at the US 550 Rail Runner station for Zia Pueblo, San Ysidro, Canon, and Jemez Springs.

What to See

J & R Vintage Auto Museum

J & R Vintage Auto Museum (jrvintageautos.com) showcases more than 60 antique cars and trucks, including a 1917 Marmon, a 1912 Buick and a 1969 Mercury Cougar. Some of the automobiles are available for purchase. The museum also showcases antique car memorabilia, such as books and die-cast toys.

Santa Ana Star Center

This place plays host to major concerts, sporting events and cultural programs. The venue is home to the New Mexico Mustangs, a junior hockey team, and the New Mexico Stars, an indoor football team. Additional programming includes such events as monster truck shows and Cirque du Soleil. The venue has a capacity of up to 7,500, including 26 luxury suites and 500 club seats.

Chamisa Hills Golf and Country Club

One of the best places to visit in Rio Rancho, this attraction features 27 holes of championship golf. The course includes towering trees, bluegrass covering and numerous ponds. The semiprivate country club also features tennis courts, cabanas and a swimming pool. The course has a pro shop and golf lessons.

Matheson Winery

Matheson Winery produces a mixture of red and white wines, including Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons. Over the years, the establishment’s wines have won awards at the New Mexico State Fair and Bernalillo Wine Festival. Open five days a week, the tasting room offers samples of the winery’s different blends.

Santa Ana Star Casino

This place features 1,400 slot machines and numerous gaming tables, including blackjack, poker, craps and roulette. The casino also offers a rewards club that provides players with access to VIP events, gifts and casino discounts. On-site dining options include a buffet, fast food and bar and grill settings.
