Beautiful Brisbane

There are no words to describe the beauty of Brisbane. It is a city established along the banks of Brisbane River.

It is flourishing with splendor, art, food, parks, and cultural and historic buildings. There are just so many things to do and explore at this gorgeous city.

OVERVIEW OF BRISBANE

Australia is divided into several states, one of which is Queensland. The capital and most populous city in the said state is Brisbane.

LOCATION

Brisbane is located at the southeastern part of Queensland along banks of Brisbane River up to Moreton Bay. Brisbane is hilly.

Prominent peaks include Mount Coot-tha, Enoggera Hill, Mount Gravatt, Mount Petrie, Whites Hill, Mount Glorious, Mount Nebo, and many more.

CLIMATE

Generally speaking, Brisbane has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are characterized as hot and humid; occurs from October to March.

But during the months of November to March there are rain and thunderstorms during the afternoon. The months of June to August are generally cooler.

DEMOGRAPHICS

The total population of Brisbane was more than 2 million in 2013. They were either born in Australia or migrated from other countries like United Kingdom, New Zealand, and India.

Aside from English, other languages spoken include Mandarin, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Samoan, and Spanish.

TRANSPORTATION

For long trips such as interstate or intercity travel there are planes, buses, trains, and ferries available.

• The city’s main airport is Brisbane Airport. It is the country’s third busiest airport. In 2012 the airport catered to more than 21.3 million passengers. The airport serves as a major gateway from other international cities and Australian cities.

• Buses are an alternative means of transportation to get into the city.

• Trains also link Brisbane to other major Australian cities. There are daily train services to these cities.

• The high speed ferry service runs along Brisbane River. It is a popular choice for tourists and a lot of commuters.

Once inside the city, it is easy to get around. One can opt to walk, ride the bike, cabs or taxis, motorcycles, bus, and trains.

THE CITY BOTANIC GARDENS

Brisbane Botanic Gardens or now known as the City Botanic Gardens is a nice attraction at the central business district of Brisbane.

Within the park one could find various botanic species such as palms, cycads, figs, and bamboo. 

Some of the prominent features on this park include the Riverstage, City Gardens Café, Gardens Cycle Hire station, Walter Hill Fountain, Morning Star II by Jon Barlow Hudson, and Plant form by Robert Juniper.

KANGAROO POINT CLIFFS

Just across Brisbane River one could find Kangaroo Point Cliffs. It is a famous attraction to both locals and tourists.

It is also a good place to go for some rock climbing adventure. Adjacent to it is a park where families could get together and have fun.

SOUTH BANK PARKLANDS

Another lovely outdoor attraction is South Bank Parklands. The park opened in 1992. Unlike other parks, this park is a combination of natural surroundings (rainforest, water, and grass lands) as well as man-made attractions (Streets Beach, Grand Arbour, Courier Mail Piazza, Nepal Peace Pagoda, Wheel of Brisbane, restaurants and shops).

FAMOUS LANDMARKS

STORY BRIDGE

The Story Bridge is considered to be a national landmark of the city. It is a ‘heritage-listed steel cantilever bridge’ that crosses over Brisbane River.

With a total length of 282 meters, it is the longest cantilever bridge in the country.

BRISBANE CITY HALL

Brisbane City Hall is the seat of Brisbane City Council and one of the most prominent landmarks in the area.

Aside from being the seat of Brisbane City Council, it is also used for royal receptions, pageants, orchestral concerts, civic greetings, flower shows, school graduations, and political meetings.

ST JOHN’S CATHEDRAL

Another landmark of the city is St John’s Cathedral, an Anglican cathedral. Unlike other architectures, the cathedral was made in collaboration by clergy, stonemasons, and architects.

It is the only Victorian Gothic cathedral in the country. The whole cathedral took a hundred years before it was finally finished.

Aside from its architectural detail the cathedral is famous for the choir composed of boys and men, and a four manual pipe organ – the largest cathedral organ of the country.

The cathedral is used for important events like ordination of priests and deacons, center for arts and music, and a pilgrimage center receiving at least 20,000 tourists each year.

Brisbane Cricket Ground, also known as The Gabba is the major sports stadium in the city. Some popular games played in this stadium include cricket, football, soccer, rugby, and greyhound racing.

SUNCORP STADIUM

The most prominent feature of Lang Park is the sport stadium, Suncorp Stadium. It is a three tiered rectangular sporting stadium.

The whole stadium can hold a total of 52,500 people. Of the three tiers, the top is closed for private events and can cater to 30,000 people.

NATURAL WILDLIFE

LONE PINE KOALA SANCTUARY

When at Australia it is a must to see domestic animals such as koalas. Here in Brisbane, the best place to see and interact with koalas and other domestic animals is at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.

It was established in 1927 making it the oldest and largest koala sanctuary in the world.

Other animals that are being taken care of include kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, wombats, echidnas, platypus, parrots, cockatoos, kookaburras, emus, and much more.
