OVERVIEW OF KATHMANDU

GEOGRAPHY
Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal; it is also the largest city in the country with an area of 50.67 square kilometers.
It lies at the northwestern part of Kathmandu Valley. It has an approximate elevation of 1,400 meters.

CLIMATE
Summer at Kathmandu has an average temperature of 28 to 30 degree Celsius. This occurs between the months of April to July.
While winter is from November to February with a temperature of 10.1 degrees Celsius but could drop to 3 degrees Celsius.
During the monsoon months of June to August, the city experiences the most amount of rain.
DEMOGRAPHICS
In 2011 the total population in Kathamandu reached more than 3 million. Of this population most believe in Hinduism and Buddhism.
There is no need to worry about communication since a lot understands the English language.
PLACES TO SEE
The cultural heritage of Kathmandu is astonishing and unique. As a matter of fact, UNESCO recognized the city, together with sister cities: Lalitpur Patan and Bhaktapur, as a World Heritage Site.
KATHMANDU DURBAR SQUARE

In front of the palaces of Malla and Shah Kings, one of the three old royal palaces is a plaza called Kathmandu Durbar Square.
Some call the place Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square. Surrounding the plaza are remarkable architectures made by skillful artists, there are temples, courtyards, and quadrangles.
SWAYAMBHUNATH

Swayambhunath, also known as Monkey Temple, is an ancient religious complex. Buddhist considers this the second most sacred pilgrimage site.
The said religious complex consists of shrines, temples, monastery, museum, and library. Current additions include shops, restaurants, and hostels.
PASHUPATINATH TEMPLE

As mentioned, Kathmandu is home to a number of Hindu temples, one of which is Pashupatinath Temple.
The temple was dedicated to Pashupatinath and one of the most sacred temples for Hindus.
According to UNESCO: “this ‘extensive Hindu temple precinct’ is a ‘sprawling collection of temples, ashrams, images and inscriptions taised over the centuries along the banks of the sacred Bagmati River.”
KOPAN MONASTERY

Near the outskirts of the city is Kopan Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery. This is the place is highly recommended to foreigners wishing to study Buddhist teachings.
“Kopan” is divided in to two: the monastery itself and the nunnery.
DHARAHARA

Dharahara (7)
Dharahara or Bhimsen Tower is one of the recognized architecture and landmark in Kathmandu. It stands at 61.88 meters or equivalent to nine floors.
On the 8th floor, tourists could take a glimpse of the beautiful city.
