Once in a while, we all want a break from the neon lights, traffic jams, crowded sidewalks, and the fast-paced life of big cities; however, you’re already tired or simply not in the mood for panoramic views of nature, the turquoise water of beaches, and the usual vacation spot offered by Google.

If what you have in mind is somewhere teeming with life and fresh view at the same time, then Cesky Krumlov will more than satisfy your need.

LOCATION

Cesky Krumlov is a small fairytale-like town in the Czech Republic where an age-old castle was also located.

It has been UNESCO World Heritage Site subsequent to its restoration after the damage the World War II has inflicted to this picturesque city.

HISTORY

Cesky Krumlov is founded by one of the branches of the Vítkovci family called Lords of Krumlov around 1253. It was later inherited by the Rosenbergs Family in which under these rulers the town achieved prosperity.

The former gothic-styled castle was then transformed in the characteristics of Baroque around the start of the 17th century. At the turn of 18th century to 19th century, the town started to stagnate.

It got worse during the World War II and was later revived and included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site at 1992. To this date, the little town is a picture of fairytale land by maintaining their old castle, winding streets, rolling hills, cobblestone sidewalks and its over-all old town appeal. It wa now resided by 14, 000 residents.

CLIMATE

Cesky Krumlov has an average 18 degrees Celsius in July to August. It is the warmest average temperature of the city while the coldest is -1 degree Celsius in January.

It could be deducted that the weather here is cold so ready your thick-furred clothes.

TRANSPORTATION

Surprise, Surprise! Cesky Krumlov is a car-free zone. This little town is really serious in making you feel like you have stepped into a time-warp. However, you can go there through buses, train, or by plane.

There is a Prague Ruzyne Airport or the Linz-Horsching Airport in Austria. There are also bus and train stations at Prague that are available several times a day at regular intervals.

If walking does not appeal to you, getting around the town would be through buses and taxis available outside the Old Town.

WHAT TO SEE

Eggenberg Brewery

Four hundred years ago, a brewery was built in the castle grounds of Cesky Krumlov due to the flourishing business in brewery.

The water used in brewing was discovered a year later after it was built and is still being used today due to its freshness and high-quality.

The estate and the brewery were acquired later on by the Eggenbergs, thus its name. Tourists are invited to sample their rich product and also to explore its winding history together with how their product was made.

Old Town

The Old Town is a home for galleries and museums that exhibits the rich history of the little town.

It boasts its 34, 000 collections that includes Bohemian Antiques and artifacts, which reflects the lifestyle of Cesky Krumlov at the turn of the 19th century.

Vltava River

Winding around town is the Vltava River, which offers numerous activities such as kayak, canoe, and rafting.

While traversing through the river, you can enjoy the picturesque view this tow has to offer in form of its medieval-styled buildings that was scattered around town. There are numerous hotels and inns available if you have not finished sight-seeing.

Cesky Krumlov has the bragging rights when it comes to their castle complex. A structure mix of Gothic, Baroque, and Rennaisance, it has forty buildings, palaces, courtyards, gardens, Baroque theater built in the 14th century, 180-foot tall tower and galleries of murals that date back to 16th century.

This well preserved castle has free entrance and if you want a tour-guide, you have to pay for a few dollars.
