When a travel destination has a huge land area, then it is expected to be bustling with a civilization pegged on high-top industries, complex communication between inhabitants and streams of people crowding every inch of space.

But some places display the opposite—vast lands of resided land, concentrated human settlements, minimal skyscrapers and unassuming population, which relies on contentment.

It might sound a bit sad for those who seek noise and activity, but this can just be the most perfect spot for those who crave for solace, organization and temporary confinement.

The deafening sound as early as 6 at night and the peaceful sunlight opening the day without blaring horns and human noise—some travelers wish for these.

And if you wanted to have a journey that’s been pegged at peace and appreciation of the little things, and then head straight to Katherine in Australia’s Northern Territory and you just might have met your match.

Specifically, Katherine can be found on the banks of the Katherine River from where its name came from. It is a good 320 kilometers from another famous Northern Territory city, Darwin, Kakadu on its northeastern end and the Barkley and Kimberly regions dotting its outskirts.

True to its description, Katherine is just being lived by almost 6,000 inhabitants and the closest town to RAAF Base Tindal which a good 17 kilometers distance.

Due to the fact that Katherine is just adjacent to a huge body of water and is backed by a series of land through towns and cities, it has a climate under the tropical savannah class. Ideally, Katherine’s annual climate can be very specific to either wet or dry season.

Stopping at the infamous Katherine Transit Center, travelers can alight and catch a bus ride via Greyhound Australia, which has daily and regular travels to and fro Darwin, Alice Springs, Queensland, or Western Australia.

If you’d want to have a more specific mapping and traveling, other option would be the Bodhi Bus that scans the intrinsic areas of communities and settlements in and out of Katherine.

There’s also a chance for you to do a stopover in Katherine when you’re staying at Adelaide or Darwin and that is through the Ghan Train being managed and operated by the Great Southern Rail.

If traveling by air, the Katherine Airport, which is a good 15 kilometers away from the city center, is your best bet. Just keep in mind that commercial flights are not being catered here and you’d need to arrange for special charter flights to get in and out of the town.

What to See

Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre

Known to be one of Katherine’s most important landmarks, the Godinymayin Yijard River Arts and Culture Center is where the old and the new culture meet to give each other entertainment.

True to its main aim in bridging the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous people, this complex is an avenue where you can hear, feel and see how Katherine inhabitants take care of their heritage through singing, galleries and performances.

There is also a gallery, which showcases a magnificent collection of Territory art pieces, and this is just 1 kilometer away off Katherine’s city center and a public pool.

Katherine Museum

Originally an airport, this place has been converted to a new purpose of being a museum which houses aircrafts and trucks on the likes of the original Gypsy Moth biplane.

Aside from the humongous stuff that can be seen inside, there is also an area of historical photos and artifacts from the memorable 1998 flood that happened to Katherine.

Jurassic Cycad Gardens

As what the name suggests, the Jurassic Cycad Gardens is now an avenue for you to behold an overwhelming line of ancient cycad species, which is being numbered at 200 kinds.

After you have skimmed the whole complex of rare plants, which also includes baobabs, ferns and cacti, get yourself relaxed and just take all the greens on a cafe found inside the area.

School of the Air

If you wanted to be aware of how a rural Katherine feed its youth with education, then head to the School of Air and see the children of the town being properly acquainted with the things of the ‘virtual’ world.
