crete (1)

“Megalónisos”, the “Great Island”, is the Greek nickname for Crete and actually it is nearly a country unto itself. The island is home to one of the lengthy beach hideaway seasons as well; north-coast beaches tend to be long and sandy if a bit disclosed, while others are suitable to be shorter but more isolated.

Crete and a number of neighboring islands and islets compose the region of Crete, one of the 13 top-level administrative units of Greece.

Crete forms an important part of the economy and traditional legacy of Greece, while maintaining its own local cultural character. It was once the center of the Minoan society, which is now viewed as the first recorded civilization in Europe.

The capital and the biggest city is Heraklion. As of 2011, the region had a population of 623,065. Currently it also generates an excess of succulent goods owing to the extended growing period in Greece. Crete is, after all, a small universe filled with charm and gems that you will most likely require a lifetime to crack!
