Say Seychelles!

Brief History

Seychelles, formally the Republic of Seychelles, is an island in the Indian Ocean. The Seychelles are a group of 115 islands, only a few settled, in the Indian Ocean that lies off the coast of East Africa, northeast of Madagascar.

The Seychelles were contested among France and Great Britain amid the age of colonialism, with Britain closing up in authority in 1814 after the Napoleonic Wars. The islands were apportioned and resolved by France in the 18th century.

African servants were carried to the island, and the typical Seychellois Creole language matured. In 1977, a coup d’état by France Albert René expelled the first president of the republic, James Mancham.

France Albert Rene dismayed over-dependence on tourism and announced that he desired “to keep the Seychelles for the Seychellois”. Since then, the government of Seychelles has been nearly steady and has sustained various votiings. In 1991, the country’s modern constitution was forged and put into effect.

Geography

It is also about 932 miles (1,500 km) east of mainland Africa. The majority of the islands are deserted, with many devoted as nature reservoirs. The islands fall in two main physical types.

The islands of the central group, containing the principal island Mahe, are built from granite, and consist of a mountainous heart ringed by a flat coastal band.

The outer islands are made up of coral accumulations at different levels of composition, from reefs to islands. With its area of only 175 square miles (455 km) and a population of just over 88,000, Seychelles is the tiniest country in Africa. Its capital and largest city is Victoria.
