Miri is a coastal city to be found in the border of Brunei, perched deeply on the island of Borneo. It is said to be the northeastern tip of Sarawak in Malaysia and is covering a whopping 385 square miles of land area.

On the map, Miri is specifically located at about 800 kilometers off of Kuching and it is Kota Kinabalu’s southwestern counterpart at 330 kilometers. The city is also being bordered by the infamous Baram River, which is parallel and connected to the South China Sea.

Like some of Malaysia’s area and districts, Miri is experiencing a tropical rainforest climate which is suitable for healthy vegetation. Seasons are subdivided into two which are the southwest monsoon and northeast monsoon classes.

During the southwest monsoon period, Miri is at its driest during April to September, delivering a 31-degree mark on its temperature. Northeast monsoon season, on the other hand, is considered to be rainy and wet tackling the months of October to March.

The air temperature is in the range of 23-32-degree Celsius annually and can drop down to as low as 18-degrees during December.

Miri is a developed district as their land and roadways are being managed by a department called the Miri City Council. Traveling from Brunei’s Bandar Seri Begawan, Miri is accessible which a good 35-kilometer distance is.

Through high-maintenance of accessibility, the city is connected to neighboring towns such as Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Bintulu and Marudi. Traveling via bus, Miri can offer two options which are called local and long-distance travels. Taxi services are also within reach to take you within the veins of the city.

Miri is known to have vast resources of oil wells and Canada Hill are one of the remaining derricks since the 1910. Now that it is not operating, Canada Hill is a popular spot for tourists who go by every morning to stretch and relax during sunset.

What’s a trip without visiting the local market for goods and souvenirs? Be saturated by Miri produce such as locally-grown tropical fruits, satay, handicrafts, etc. and haggle to your heart’s content.

Trek your way outside the city center and walk a good three kilometer distance, get into the pandemonium that is the Saberkas Weekend Market and bring the best of Miri once you stepped out.

At a great distance of 30 kilometers from Miri, take this as a part of your day trip itinerary. Submerge yourself into this rainforest and be amazed by how nature worked through small-scale waterfalls, trails made for tourists and cognitive areas for picnics and outdoor relaxation.

San Ching Tian Temple

Just newly erected in 2000, San Ching Tian Temple is said to be the largest Taoist temple in the whole of Southeast Asia.

Be in spirit with the whole Miri community and be mesmerized by humongous dragon reliefs that can be seen inside the temple.
