When it comes to windsurfer’s paradise, Pistol River is the most picked. It is remote, beautiful, and has roaring winds and big waves – the perfect combination for the perfect big jumps.
LOCATION

(2)
Pistol River is formerly known as Rouge River, but was later renamed on its present name after pioneer James Mace lost his pistol in 1853 in the Rouge River wars.
The river lies in the Curry County of Oregon. The county is located at the south bordered by Coquille and Josephine counties. The area faces the Pacific Ocean, its coast extending from the north to south.
The Pistol River streams from the Southern Oregon Coast Range, rushing for 34 kilometers from the Siskiyou National Forest near the unincorporated Pistol River community of Oregon State. It then empties out in the Pacific Ocean at the Pistol River State scenic Viewpoint.
CLIMATE
Winds at Pistol River State Park are constantly on shore; however, the best bets are on the months of May through September. May, June, and September are the times when swells stay at longer periods.
To know more about the current and specific wind speeds, check out the forecast charts using this link: http://www.windsurforegon.com/oregon-coast-mm5. It is constantly updated to tell you how many knots are there per hour.
TRANSPORTATION

(3)
Going to Pistol River, you have to drive through the Oregon Coast Highway (101). If you’re from the north, catch the I5 going south, and then exit at 162, 20 miles after Eugene, to get to Highway 38 where you can get to Reedsport in order to catch 101.
Drive south from there. The drive will take around two hours. However, if you’re from south, you can take 101 all the way going to the north until you’re near the end of the Pistol River State park, where the spot is located.
ATTRACTION

(4)
The long 101 road offers a beautiful sight of the coastal area. The Pacific waves rhythmically laps at the shore of the county of Curry seemingly in constant spar with the rocks peppering the landscape on-shore and a few meters off-shore. This panorama is the perfect excuse to take a break from the long drive.
Still, don’t make it too long because the main course of this adventure is coming right up!

(5)
The winds in the Piston River attract windsurfers like bees to honey. Due to its consistency, American Windsurfing Tour created the Piston River Wave Bash, which happens on the month of June.
A lot of athletes performed their big jumps here. The cold water, rough ocean, big waves, and strong gusts of winds brings an exhilarating feeling even to those who are just watching. However, make sure you come full prepared with an extra gear or else you’ll be forced to sit out your adrenaline rush, while your buddies takes all the action.
