Playa Del Amor, the no-longer obscure beach

Playa de Amor

(1) The now famous Playa del Amor

When it comes to summer holiday getaways, often we have beaches on top of our list as our destination. However, most of them are beach resorts with nothing new except maybe our new bikinis or the not-anymore floral board shorts.

It can live our summer memories not as memorable as we want them to be. (Or maybe it is memorable not just the way we want them to be.) So here’s another on-the-coast destination to cater to your needs.

LOCATION

Nayarit
(2) Nayarit

Off the coast of Nayarit Mexico in the archipelago of Marieta Islands is the so-called “Hidden Beach.” Formed by volcanic eruptions, the archipelago itself is a wonder, but the beach it hides takes the cake.

The “Hidden Beach” or officially called as the Playa Del Amor meaning “Beach Lovers” was located at the mouth of Banderas Bay. It was also near Puerto Vallarta and just a boat away from the mainland.

Just like most places in Mexico, the peak season at Playa del Amor happens in wintertime during the months of December to March. For those who are not fond of crowds, the spring season would be the best time to go happening during the months of May and June.

It is less crowded and you can get cheaper deals at this grate as the peak season dies down. You can, however, go in summer months but that would be risky as storms also hit during that time.

Despite being called by one too many a remote place, kit is pretty easy to get to. What you need to do is fly at Puerto Vallarta airport where they serve international flights.

From there, you can take a boat going to Playa del Amor. You should know that only permitted boats are allowed, so you need to have a guided tour arranged beforehand.

ATTRACTION

Tunnel

The main attraction is – of course – the Playa del Amor. It accessed through a tunnel where you can paddle your way in when the tide is not high.

You don’t even need scuba diving gears in order to get inside. But remember that’s only for low tide. There are times that the tide is high, so you need to swim underwater in order to get to the tunnel.

You can see the beach from above the Mexican ground. The gaping hole cuts through the lush greenery of the place giving way to another wonder caused by deliberate bombings in the early 1900s where the place is used for test sites.

Frequent bombings altered the landscape of the island, forming caves, rock formations, and now the famous “Hidden Beach.”

Hidden Beach
(7) Inside the “Hidden Beach:” what to expect

The inside of the beach can get packed during the peak season and some maybe in some major disappointment when the supposed to be magical place turned out to be a market of rowdy people goofing and making noise destroying your expectations.

One way to enjoy is to lower your standard as the Playa del Amor is not hidden anymore. It is already a major tourist spot. So, if you really like some quiet time in this place, choose a season that will less likely have too many people as what we keep on saying from the very start.

Apart from the notable features of Playa del Amor, you’ll also enjoy whale watching on the way to the hidden beach. Usually, whales flock at the Bay of Banderas during March.
